Who has two thumbs and went to a Taylor Swift show a few days ago?

The tween girl standing next to me, obviously.

Okay, no, cringe, it was me (just in case you couldn’t guess). I was initially NOT going to tell this to many people but Jessica caught me in the act when I quickly blurted it out after being asked out for drinks that evening. I went on Tuesday to her Red Tour show at the Erwin Center with my wonderful, pop music loving boyfriend who got me the tickets (he was covering it for a local publication <— see we have a good excuse)

But you know what? It was a whole lot of fun. Girl knows how to put on a show!

She walked out assuredly on stage, in full pop music diva mode, and stared out at her adoring fans. She was basking in it, looking out with a half smile, taking a glance to the left and to the right. Taylor Swift, as my boyfriend said, was meant to do this.

The show was inspired by a mix of genres - burlesque meets old Hollywood meets steampunk meets circus. Oh, and there was heart confetti blasted out of pressurizers. The number I most genuinely enjoyed was when Taylor sat down at her piano for the emotionally turbulent number “All Too Well.” The girl knows a little about heartbreak, something we can all relate to, and this song’s lyrics reflected it particularly well.

Here are the other highlights:

1) Luke standing in line with about a hundred screaming little girls to receive a Taylor Swift shirt.

2) T. Swift saying “12,000 of you opted in to hear songs about my feelings”

3) The fangirl who was at least in her thirties (basically past prime Taylor Swift fangirl age) wearing a shirt emblazoned with “Taylor Swift or Die.” At one point Swift was lifted across the stage to the other side of the auditorium and this girl FREAKED OUT. Like, crying, screaming freaking out. The little girls surrounding her seemed concerned at multiple points.

4) The last number “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” - The cavalcade of circus performers and screaming the lyrics along with my bf were both major highlights. This is also when the confetti was shot out, making me fangirl (just a ‘lil bit).

T. Swift… you just might have a new fan in this girl but STAY AWAY FROM MY MAN. (kiddin’ Taylor, just kiddin’)

Love,

Kelsey Swift

PS. Here’s a review my boyfriend wrote.

Coming off an exciting weekend at Renegade Craft Fair here in Austin, the Son of a Sailor crew is resting up for the rest of the summer’s shows and events. For part two of summertime trends let’s start off with an easy, modern look - a look that will seem at home in whichever city you may find yourself in this summer.

1) Black and White

It isn’t the corals, seafoams or neons we’re used to seeing on summer’s clothing palette, but there is something very cool (literally/figuratively) about this combination. This is a look you actually can wear year round and it won’t look out of place.

Designers brought this look back in a major way last season, which was kind of a relief after all of the color block madness. Despite this being in style this summer, it’s probably nothing you have to run out and buy. Any piece that comes in black or white is usually a good wardrobe staple to have, whether that’s a pair of black cotton shorts, a black dress of any length or a white collared shirt.

(Photo Credit: Vena Cava Spring 2013 at TENOVERSIX)

2) Bustier/ crop top

SJP’s a total baller in this 1991 photo sporting a gold crop top and genie pants. Should this look be worn regularly by everyone? Absolutely not, but it provides some campy inspiration for this trend that has been creeping back into style.

Crop tops are fickle things. They’re not a flattering look for a lot of people but if you’re looking to have some tacky fun with your wardrobe, this should be your jam. Christopher Muther, Boston Globe’s style reporter, expressed horror over seeing the trend on the runways, lamenting nineties pop star midriffs and his own bad experience with a crop top emblazoned with Daytona Beach. This is totally understandable yet…they’re sorta fun. If you don’t want to rock the full-on stomach-baring look, giving a hint of works even better.

(Photo Credit: Sweet World of Fashion)

3) Holographic

This timing of this trend coincides perfectly with the release of the futuristic disco Daft Punk album. Holographic items will work well on the dance floor with one of the soundtracks of summer 2013. The trick to this trend is to do it in small doses - a holographic oxford shoe here, a holographic clutch there.

Designers followed this aesthetic by using key splashes of it in their spring shows. Proenza Schouler used it in bags and Hussein Chalayan used it in leggings. This is a trend for pure nighttime fun this summer, and we can all only hope our summer’s filled with that!

And I can’t leave out one of our favorites, Golden Ponies. A certain someone wore some mint green shoes from GP, and loved them! Erandi, the designer behind this awesome label, also makes some pretty rad holographic shoes and accessories. Case in point, this wallet:

Next Wednesday look for part 3 of summertime trends. A Pinterest board is in the works as we scour the net for some great (and cheap!) finds for summer fashion. In the meantime, let us know some of your favorite summer wardrobe staples.

Wednesday Series: Summer 2013 Trends

It’s summertime, beach babes (and dudes). These next few Wednesday posts will be dedicated to navigating the trends of summer 2013, from the neutral, calm waters to the scary territory of graphic prints (and there are some frightening ones out there). Here are the first three on our list…

1) Chambray

(Photo Credit: Perfect Chambray Ex-Boyfriend Shirt from Madewell.com)

We’ve been seeing this trend creep into wardrobes since spring began. It seems each summer has its summer shirt staple, something basic that can be thrown on all summer long and worn in a multitude of ways. This season chambray (like denim but not quite) is coming to our rescue all summer long — particularly when you’re on vacation and it’s one of two shirts you brought (something this writer may have done recently). It’ll work just as well on the beach as it will tucked into a skirt for dinner later on.

2) Tropicalia

Harmony Korine’s much-hyped and much-discussed film Spring Breakers has brought neon and tropical prints into the Tumblrs and Polyvore boards of many young women this summer (let’s hope it didn’t bring robbing banks for Spring Break cash into style as well). Selena Gomez, one of the former Disney stars in the movie, went to the premiere wearing the tropical bralet above.

(Photo credit: Ralph Lauren Denim and Supply line)

It’s pretty cute, we have to admit. Tropical prints first came into style in the United States post-World War II as soldiers came back with stories from the tropical destinations some of them had been stationed at. It’s since been associated with retro nostalgia but this Spring tropical prints were reinvented, with roots in Tropicalia and Tiki kitsch.

3) Mirrored sunglasses

(Photo credit: Wildfox Sun // Refinery 29)

Keeping in line with tropical kitsch, we have reflective sunglasses back in our lives. The best thing about these gems coming back into style is that it’s gas station couture (in other words you can pick up a pair anywhere for a pretty good price).

You can have fun with it and go full 1980s b-list beach movie with the sunglasses above…

Or you can downplay the look like this Paris Fashion Week attendee.

(Photo Credit: Style Snooper Dan )

So far, we’re pretty willing to try the aforementioned styles out on for size. Stay tuned next Wednesday for our next three!

our favorite traveling craft fair, Renegade, is here in Austin...

our favorite traveling craft fair, Renegade, is here in Austin again!

this is the perfect time to come meet William + I and check out our wares in person. there’s quite a few new items we’ve been rolling out over at Son of a Sailor Supply, and we’ll have our best jewelry available.

for us, this is kicking off our busy 2013 market season! currently, we’re confirmed to be at the following shows:

June 22+23: Renegade Brooklyn

July 13+14: Urban Craft Uprising in Seattle

July 27+28: Renegade San Francisco

We are also crossing our fingers that we’ll be able to participate in Renegade Chicago, so keep your ears open for that announcement!

William and I really love the interaction with our friends and followers at these fairs. So, if you’re around, make a point to come say hi!

Also, stay tuned for a special opportunity to receive an exclusive discount at any Son of a Sailor event…

A Visit to Carol Young Undesigned - Los Angeles

You don’t get much cooler than Los Feliz. One of many, many little enclaves in Los Angeles, this neighborhood contains the Griffith Observatory (where you can find beautiful Hollywood Sign views along the trails), an amazing architectural history (including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock house) and enough boutiques, cafes and watering holes tucked on the palm tree-lined streets to keep this ardent people watcher very happy.

Carol Young Undesigned is firmly entrenched in the Los Feliz culture, going on seven years in its location on one of Los Feliz’s most well-known streets, Hillhurst Avenue. I was excited to visit this Son of a Sailor stockist during my trip to Los Angeles because there is something particularly inspiring about seeing the connection between what you’re creating in the studio and the people who are selling handmade goods, yours and other artisans, to the communities they thrive in.

Carol and her assistant Claudia are both warm and laidback, exuding that Southern California spirit. Within a few minutes of walking in, Claudia was already chatting with my friend Aaron, who had accompanied me, about his apartment search and giving him tips on the best neighborhoods and how to find a good deal.

The walls of the shop are painted a rich, toasty yellow and the interior is filled with elements of nature - light, wood, rocks, glass. I did a little research on Carol’s shop and found a featurette in an old WWD article. I learned Carol was an architecture student who studied in Asia and New York, along with a stint in India. After a fellowship at Cornell to look at functional needs in apparel, she launched Undesigned, a line based on alternative and recycled materials.

All of this makes sense. Upon walking in the shop, one gets the sense that the boutique is designed by someone who understands design elements. The shop has a definite “modern urban nomad” feel with clothing and accessories that employ architectural lines and materials. Carol has done a wonderful job of creating a space that feels contemporary yet warm, vibrant and natural.

If you find yourself wandering around Los Feliz, stop in and say hello. It’s a spot that perfectly encapsulates the feel and spirit of Southern California relaxed modernity.

To all my fellow “modern urban nomads”,

Hey guys!

As many of you already know, we moved this past February to our studio at Canopy, a new creative complex off of Springdale Road in East Austin. Billy and Jessica have done an ah-mazing job fixing up the studio and making it not only a comfortable, efficient workspace but a fun place to hang out.

This weekend is our chance to show off our new space to the public and, most importantly, our stately portraits of David Bowie and Bill Murray on our studio walls. This Saturday May 11 from 10 am - 5pm and Sunday May 12 from 11 am - 5 pm studios throughout Canopy will be open to the general public as a “first look” studio tour.

We have a bunch of awesome neighbors working in a variety of creative mediums - painters, architects, sculptors, designers, photographers, etc. The space, which used to be the old Blue Hangar Goodwill, has the potential to be a creative force for not just Austin but art in Texas—-and this is your chance to be see it from the beginning.

Our friend Claire Montgomery, a local ceramicist, will be showing her work in our studio, as well. This mini-show of some of our favorite of her beautiful pieces coincides with Art of the Pot, an annual studio tour featuring local potters.

Festivities surrounding Art of the Pot will be happening alongside the open studio event, as Keith Kreeger, an amazing potter himself, hosts events from his Canopy studio space.

We hope to see your lovely faces there. Stop by and say hi to William + Jessica, and myself and my fellow Studio Assistants throughout the weekend. (libations will be provided!)

XOXO,

so, we got this lovely little gem in the mail yesterday, and i had to share! the cover alone feeds my love of both neon pink (undying) and good type. i thought it was just going to be an advertisement, but lo and behold! it is a new publication by Fab, that profiles their designers! and it’s awesome!

check it out…

instantly i appreciated the clean layout, type, and fantastic images. the publication, of which this is volume one, will profile ten partners of Fab each issue.

i am not sure how often they plan on publishing a volume, but i sort of hope it’s monthly! i know that they have multitudes of cool makers and designers to choose from, so content is readily available. ahem—-yeah, uh, i guess we’d be interested, Fab! :)

all i know is that the design is great, it profiles some really interesting and relevant makers, and i love me some print! keep ‘em coming, Fab! me likey!

in what was the longest interview we’ve ever had, Billy and i spent two hours on skype with Sumeera. she is lovely, and we can’t wait to meet her in person when we venture to New York in June. and the collaboration we’ve created, on four exclusive Madesmith pieces, brought forth new colors and palettes for our jewelry.

but the best part, the part that has filled me with joy and extracted tears of pride, love, and humble flattery, is the story that they captured about the beginning of Son of a Sailor. go take a look—it means so much to us, and we believe it truly captures the spirit of what we’re doing.

and you can pick up the exclusive designs of some of our favorite jewelry, while you’re at it!

last weekend Billy & I attended Structure & Sign, the 2013 Senior Design Exhibition for the UT College of Fine arts. Kirsten Schroder, one of our incredible Production Assistants, exhibited her work, which included a series of illustrated books that she created.

We are so proud of Kirsten, and I just had to share her gorgeous work! Come take a look…

The whole event was filled with beautiful and intriguing pieces that explore “the blending of spaces—three-dimensional, two-dimensional, time-based, and otherwise—and how design, in communication with these spaces, becomes greater than the sum of its parts.”

Kirsten’s work spoke to me about childlike whimsy and inquisitive adventure, and was also simply beautiful to look at!

It was great to see Kirsten’s personality shine through her books, and her sheer talent for creating colorful and playful worlds really shine. I’m hoping she makes these books available to buy—-I’d love to have a set.

Billy and I are so proud of her as she looks towards graduation and entering into the next major phase of her life. She has been such a key part of Son of a Sailor’s growth and success, and we’re counting the days to when we can get her in the studio even more than she is now.

Being in a formal gallery again was exhilarating, too, as it’s been a while since my former life in museum and gallery settings. There’s something magical about the deliberate presentation of one’s creations that makes the whole thing more magical.

So, we want to wish a hearty “Congratulations!” to Kirsten in all of her accomplishments. We look forward to finding new and exciting ways to incorporate her playful creativity into what we do at Son of a Sailor, and have her continue to grow with us.

Great job, lady! You’re the business.

there are so many creative forces behind this online publication, and i am convinced it is going to be a fresh and innovative voice for the Austin cultural scene. seriously, look who’s involved…

There’s so many amazing folks collaborating on this project, just go take a look. The best around town in fashion, food, design, lifestyle, and everything that makes Austin such a great place to live. Don’t you want to see more about the best that this city has to offer?

I got to test drive the publication on Chris’ iPad last time he was in the studio. It is so much fun! With innovative navigation making browsing the content-rich issue fun and interactive, I was stunned at how much I wanted to read each of the in-depth and we’ll illustrated articles. I can’t wait to get my hands on the first issue.

I’ve already contributed. If I can, I’ll contribute more! I really want to see this thing get funded so that it gets the proper momentum. I know that with the right tools, Citygram will be an indispensable source for Austin information.

Last Saturday was a lovely day to be out and about in our fair city. The sun was shining and the Etsy Pop-Up Shop at West Elm felt like springtime. Walking in, I was met with bright paper flowers, all the pretty people in their spring finery, and the sounds of JT’s “Suit and Tie”.

Curated by local blogger Camille Styles, the pop-up shop featured twelve Austin-area Etsy sellers whose booths were well-integrated into the vibrant, airy atmosphere of the shop. Some of our friends were there including Christine from Fail Jewelry and Joanna from Oh Lazlo!.

The deeee-licious treats (looking at you Lala’s lavender lemonade and Tiny Pies mini pecan pies), the tunes and the photo booth capped off a delightful Saturday play date. Everything was so fun and fresh that even my boyfriend, who declared he knows he’s not single when he’s at an Etsy pop-up on a Saturday afternoon, was reluctant to leave.

It was definitely a good Saturday full of inspiring work by local Austin makers. Wish I could have brought something home from each one!

So, coming up soon, we’ll be participating in what is sure to be an amazing pop up shop over at West Elm! Austin’s own Camille Styles, a maven of things beautiful and creative, has hand picked some of her favorite local Etsy sellers to come together for an afternoon of fun.

We were thrilled to be asked, and can’t wait to display our jewelry in the beautiful room settings of the Austin West Elm store. Not to mention the company we’ll be keeping—they’re not just Camille’s favorite sellers…

Check out more after the jump…

We’ve been seeing Satchel & Sage all over—-from Feliz, the gorgeous holiday fair we participated in, to Mockingbird Domestics, the home store on South Lamar that’s been open for 6 months where we’d really just like to move in… Their prints and pillows are just gorgeous. MIght pick some up at the pop-up!

Then there’s Oh, Laszlo. It’s enough that we just want to hang out with Joanna, like, all of the time, but then she goes and makes these beautiful concrete vases and planters. We’ve got one living on our kitchen windowsill, and I get to gaze upon it every morning when I’m making coffee. Yeah, it’s pretty awesome when you love a pretty object, and also the person that made it!

Then there’s these beauties—-geometric leaded glass terrariums—-that are at the top of my list of things that I need in and around my house! But what’s even more special is that these are made by the mother of a dear friend, Christine Fail (of fail jewelry). UliMade, made by Uli Fail, is a line of beautiful objects that are skillfully crafted and totally covetable. I’m so pleased that both Uli and Christine will be at the pop-up!

So, the vital stats: Saturday, April 6 come see us at the Austin West Elm store on West 5th Street from 1pm-6pm. There will be all of the lovelies seen above, and more, as well as refreshments. It should be a great event, and we’d love to see your beautiful faces there!

As we’re still recovering from the madness of SXSW I have my eye on another festival coming up in a few weeks: the Round Top Antique Fair. This particular festival may not bring a “secret” Justin Timberlake show, collaborations like Usher and the Afghan Whigs (wait, what?), or free Taco Bell tacos but, to put it simply, if you’re into cool old stuff this place will be your mecca.

Check out more about this fantastic event after the jump…

As I was dancing at a show last week I mentioned the Round Top Antiques Fair. The mention of this festival garnered blank stares from the drunk, dancing people around me.

Me to friends dancing: “Y’all, who wants to road trip with me to the Round Top Antiques Fair a few weeks from now?”

Friends: [eyes roll, resume dancing]

This reinforced what I’ve often suspected, which is that I have aged prematurely and, in some ways, prefer antiques festivals to loud, sweaty shows. But seriously, the Round Top Antique Fair is one of the grandest times the Hill Country has to offer, come spring.

Once you turn on the country road leading out to Round Top and Warrenton, there are literally miles of antique booths lining the road. They carry everything from the more predictable antiques fare (flour tins, old signs) to the fun and bizarre (portraits of cats and doll heads).

The official Round Top Festival happens twice a year, and the 45th Annual Spring Antiques Fair is coming up the weekend of April 3. Wares from all over the world end up here, and it’s widely recognized as the one of the top antiques fairs in the country. Plus, it’s a vintage clothes lover’s heaven - I’ve found peasant blouses from the forties and shift dresses from the sixties.

It’s only an hour and a half away, so make a day trip out of it and stop by Zapps Hall, eat some pie at Royers, and dance to live music at the Carmine Dance Hall nearby.

just kidding. it’s totally inescapable. in fact, with all of the corporate sponsorship, fast food brand showcases, and tweets about the long lines and general overwhelming craziness, i’ve been loving staying in this week. yeah, i power-streamed a few episodes of Girls last night…and in no way did feel like i was missing out.

but, it’s time! we’re going to venture out into the madness. we’re headed to the Flatstock print convention, and then we’ll attempt to see some music. i’ll let you know how that goes…

i’ve been inspired to put together a new finds post about my go-to sxsw outfit—keep in mind this outfit is not for those type of sxsw-ers who are trying to showcase their cuttingest-edge super cool style, like many folks out there. that’s really not my speed. instead, this is a classic, comfy, on-trend staple kind of outfit. no neon here.

this double pocket blouse from ASOS is right up my alley these days. breezy, comfortable, and stylish, it’s perfect for running around town. $47.47

today i decidedto pile on our beaded necklaces, with reckless abandon. i’m actually loving the cluster of brightly colorblocked beaded action that’s going on with it! $46-50 each

Golden Ponies, from whom i’ve purchased a number of pair of handmade leather shoes (including my wedding shoes), now has this customizable Holly leather belt, and i’m sold. love her work, need more of it! oh, and it’s only $20…

ok, full disclosure. i wear these Frye boots everyday. probably not in a cute “oh she loves those boots and is wearing them for 2 weeks straight!” kind of a way. but more of a “hmmm, does she own any other shoes?” kind of a way. i don’t care. they are perfect. i’ve had them re-soled three times, and they are still amazing. so, yeah. i’m wearing them to sxsw. duh. $348

there are tons of boutique jeans out there, and many awesome ones, for sure. but i have to go for Levi’s as the golden standard. they’re just that awesome! these high-rise skinnies are no exception. $78

if you can’t find them vintage (i remember a few years ago when you could snag them for $10 at the thrift store…) Coach classics are basically reissues of the best designs from the legendary brand. this color is really doing it for me right now, too! $278

we’ll see if this venture out to sx confirms the fact that i’m getting too old for this shit, and that the awesome music festival i once knew has turned into a taco bell dorito piece of crap. maybe we’ll go out and have a great time in spite of it all! i’ll opt for that, as i am generally optimistic and know that we’re going to have a good time no matter what!

SIerra Keychains and things

we’ve been busy over here at Son of a Sailor! in the last month, we’ve:

-moved into our new studio! we’re putting the finishing touches on our decor, and as soon as we have the place all snazzed up! in the meantime, get little sneak peeks on our instagram feed...

-completed our taxes for 2012—the last year we will not have our records fully accounted for in Quick Books. holy hell, that was hanging over my head!

-put the finishing touches on some new products that you’ll see rolling out at Son of a Sailor Supply over the next couple of weeks!

for example, the Sierra Keychain! available in two styles, each in three colorways. inspired by geometric shapes, southwestern design, and a rich past of camping, scouting, and travelling, they make a great addition to our growing assortment of handmade accessories.

so, we’ve been busy, and a little absent on the blog, but stay tuned for more content coming up, as well as some new items!

one of our favorite boutiques, Milly & Earl, is having their one year anniversary party this Sunday! if we were in town, we would totally be there—-that crew is sure to have a kick butt party!

go help them celebrate! and tell them we said hi!

my new favorite earrings

i just wanted to send a little shout out to Mel over at Isobell—-she is making such lovely jewelry! billy bought me a pair of her small, hammered triangle earrings for christmas, and i wore them every day.

until christine’s bachelorette party happened, and i lost one. noooooooo!

thankfully mel was able to send me a replacement (along with another pair, this time circles!) and i just had to share her work with you. i put the triangles in as soon as i was done taking photos, and i will definitely be taking more care not to lose one this time.

Canopy studios here in Austin is just opening up where the old (beloved) Goodwill Blue Hanger was. with studios, offices, galleries, and creative spaces, we had to snag a spot!

as we’ve begun to grow out of our home studio (220 square feet that is full to the brim with people and stuff) this clearly became our top choice for alternative spaces. it’s mere blocks from our home, and is going to house some of the best artists and makers in austin!

they’re still putting on the finishing touches, and we’re just beginning to bring our stuff over (so many desks…) we can’t wait to share more about the new home of Son of a Sailor!

this is official son of a sailor business.
we’ve decided...

this is official son of a sailor business.

we’ve decided that this song (robyn, call your girlfriend) specifically the video of taran killam from snl split screen dancing against robyn’s video, is the official song of son of a sailor.

we’ll be continuing the trend of playing it at the beginning of every work day, here in the studio.

6 degrees of everyone i know!

i love reading about people i know. then when they’re working with other people i know, that’s even better! then, when the people that the people i know know each other, it’s a flippin’ love fest up in here! that’s how i felt reading Chris Perez’ article about a Crafted Collaboration.

it all began at last year’s East Austin Studio Tour, when Chris, a contributing writer to Apartment Therapy (which I used to do, as well) was inspired by the work of Sophie Roach. he conjured up the idea to have an illustration of hers laser etched at MakeATX on to something like Natalie Davis’s Canoe Vortex Wallet. it was a brilliant idea.

i’ve loved Sophie’s work since I met her at Schatzelein’s 2nd anniversary party, and Natalie’s leather goods are beautiful. the two ladies at MakeATX and their giant laser is are insanely inspirational as well. all of these ladies are amazing makers here in Austin, and Chris came up with a fantastic idea in this wallet!

this is why I love Austin. there is no end to the creativity that you’ll find, and folks are ready to work together at the drop of a hat! or a wallet… go check out the rest of the post, and a super cool video of the process at Chris’ blog, MetropoChris!
