our favorite traveling craft fair, Renegade, is here in Austin again!
this is the perfect time to come meet William + I and check out our wares in person. there’s quite a few new items we’ve been rolling out over at Son of a Sailor Supply, and we’ll have our best jewelry available.
for us, this is kicking off our busy 2013 market season! currently, we’re confirmed to be at the following shows:
June 22+23: Renegade Brooklyn
July 13+14: Urban Craft Uprising in Seattle
July 27+28: Renegade San Francisco
We are also crossing our fingers that we’ll be able to participate in Renegade Chicago, so keep your ears open for that announcement!
William and I really love the interaction with our friends and followers at these fairs. So, if you’re around, make a point to come say hi!
Also, stay tuned for a special opportunity to receive an exclusive discount at any Son of a Sailor event…
×when Sumeera originally contacted me about a new website she was creating that focused on makers and their stories, i was intrigued. with only a bit of description of her goals and vision, i knew we wanted to participate. today, our feature on Madesmith, one of the loveliest sites we’ve seen in quite some time, is live!
in what was the longest interview we’ve ever had, Billy and i spent two hours on skype with Sumeera. she is lovely, and we can’t wait to meet her in person when we venture to New York in June. and the collaboration we’ve created, on four exclusive Madesmith pieces, brought forth new colors and palettes for our jewelry.
but the best part, the part that has filled me with joy and extracted tears of pride, love, and humble flattery, is the story that they captured about the beginning of Son of a Sailor. go take a look—it means so much to us, and we believe it truly captures the spirit of what we’re doing.
and you can pick up the exclusive designs of some of our favorite jewelry, while you’re at it!

So, coming up soon, we’ll be participating in what is sure to be an amazing pop up shop over at West Elm! Austin’s own Camille Styles, a maven of things beautiful and creative, has hand picked some of her favorite local Etsy sellers to come together for an afternoon of fun.
We were thrilled to be asked, and can’t wait to display our jewelry in the beautiful room settings of the Austin West Elm store. Not to mention the company we’ll be keeping—they’re not just Camille’s favorite sellers…
Check out more after the jump…
×que bellisimo!
chelsea, from Coterie Market, is blowing us away with her amazingness. not only do we love her local goods delivery service, but she is hitting all of the right notes in seemingly every aspect of her business. she couldn’t be any nicer, and she keeps amazing us with things like this gorgeous promotional video.
and super big props to Christian Remde for this beautiful short film! we want one!!!
get it, girl!
×as we move into this new, fresh year, we are reflecting on the ways in which our lives and business have grown in the year preceding. what an amazing year we had, with such monumental personal milestones. we wanted to share some of the highlights of 2012…

×Anthology, arguably my favorite lifestyle magazine around, has released their 2012 Holiday Gift Guide! Not only is it chock full of super-wantable gift ideas for all sorts of folks, but we’re included in the Holiday Deals section! Like discounts? Yeah, we got ‘em!
come peruse the digital issue and hopefully fill some of the entries on your list. (And lengthen your own, if you’re like me!)
Some of our other favorites are included in the guide, too! Fail jewelry, Leah Duncan, Amelia…so many good things!
×on friday, our Karve necklace was included in a Luxe Pins post on SF Girl By Bay! i have been an avid reader (stalker) of Victoria’s blog for years now—-ever since I moved to the Bay Area. i’ve blogged about her site on Apartment Therapy when I wrote for them, and on our own humble little SOS blog! to see our jewelry on her site has sent me over the moon! thank you so much to aaron de simone, the guest blogger from I HEART LUXE who posted about our necklace!
i love these milestones in our business—to see our work in the company of such well curated content is truly exhilarating. thanks so much, SF Girl By Bay!
(all the above was my attempt to translate my true feelings into words. they are: “squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!”)
×we were recently approached by Standard Magazine, a local eco-conscious design magazine with a chic glossy appeal that we love, to adorn the subjects of one of their spreads.we were thrilled to see the finished issue in it’s modern and sharp incarnation.
The spread is a gorgeous celebration of the hill country home of two artists, Lee and Suzanne Pratt.

Not only is their home pretty enviable, but Suzanne looked awesome with three Son of a Sailor necklaces layered on! We were delighted to see how happy we imagine they made her! ;)

Go take a look! The magazine is a fresh and beautiful perspective on Texas design. We want to throw a shout out to Mallory, who really made this possible!
×fall is truly upon us, and we’re excited to cozy up with some pumpkin spice creamer in our coffee and a cozy blanket. in the spirit of autumn, take a look at our new look book for Polaris!

alright, y’all…it’s party time!
Son of a Sailor is pleased to announce the launch party for our new collection, Polaris! We’ve teamed up with Parts & Labour to present an evening of food, drinks, music, and art to celebrate our new line of jewelry.
so mark your calendars:
Thursday, September 20 from 7-10pm
there will be amazing {and free} food from Source, a new, badass catering company that sources much of their fare from local farmers and food artisans. lizzie and michelle, the amazing duo behind Source, will also be making fancy mixers for drinks!
we’ll have Deep Eddy Vodka there to mix up some {free} adult beverages, as well. food and drinks will be a perfect precursor to some super groovy music from none other than Neiliyo!
for serious, this is going to be a blast. go listen to Beach Party and Sand Dollars to get in the mood.
there will also be live screen printing by our friend Clayton Armstrong, so bring a T-shirt or buy a tote bag from us and get some fresh SOS imagery printed!
we want all of our friends to come out and bring their friends. it’s a very exciting event, and we’re pulling out all the stops, so come celebrate with us!
be sure spread the word—-it’s all open to the public, so repost this as much as you can to help get the crowd out. we wanna see you there!
another important note: we are also bogarting this evening just a bit—-it’s my brother’s birthday on the 20th, so be sure to wish him a good one!
xoxo

×you will want to mark your calendars for this special event happening in Austin from November 2nd-4th. this holiday sale featuring 27 local and national artists, makers and craftspeople is free to attend, and is being put on by Abby Powell and Natalie Davis. if you don’t know them, you should! they’re amazing ladies doing amazing things in this amazing city.
it’s the perfect companion event to Fun Fun Fun Fest, so as you head out into the city for music and general Austin adventures, come by the Palm Door for a highly curated group of makers. there’s a meet & greet and workshops, too!
we’re excited to participate, and will update with more info as the event nears. for now, come check out our Meet the Makers post!

look who made it into the fashion NEWS section of NYLON!!! we’re over the moon about this little blurb written by Rebcca Willa Davis! here’s the copy:
SHIP SHAPE
It’s nearly impossible to separate the story of Son of a Sailor from the story of its founders, William Knopp and Jessica Tata. The duo met through a mutual friend when Knopp, returning from a year spent traveling around the world, passed through San Francisco. ‘We instantly hit it off, and before we were even dating we went to this craft supply place and did craft projects on the floor of my bedroom,’ recalls Tata. In the whirlwind two years that followed, they moved to Austin, Texas, got married, bought a house, and launched their own line of nautical-tinged accessories. This month sees the introduction of what Tata calls their first ‘intentional collection,’ featuring necklaces, bracelets, and earrings bearing Son of a Sailor’s trademark blend of organic materials (like leather and brass) and brightly painted geometric shapes.
thank you so much to Davis, for including our jewelry in what has been our favorite fashion magazine for quite some time!
woo hoo!
×so, we’ve got a little Fab. sale going on right now over here…which you should check out! and while you’re there, take a look at these awesome patio chairs! yup, two of these are coming home to us!
they’re going to look so cute once we finish xeriscaping the back yard! oh, impulse purchases. you’re so easy when you’re 35% off!

so we have a lot to write about from the brooklyn trip, but we’re taking today off! in fact, we’re going to go hop in the river when i’m done writing this. (it’s hot here, y’all)
but, i wanted to share this link with you guys—-we’re thrilled to have been chosen by Brooklyn Magazine as one of “The 10 best things we saw at the Renegade Craft Fair!” We’re honored to be among the ranks of some other awesome designers, and their photographer, Winnie Au, got some awesome shots. I was pretty certain that my photo was going to be a mess of hot, wind-blown squinting into the sun, but she rocked it!
we’ll be back with more about the trip, but for now, thanks so much to Brooklyn Magazine, to Rebecca Willa Davis for selecting us, and to Winnie Au for getting some great photos!
